When it comes to getting a great night’s sleep, we all try different things throughout our lifetimes to ensure that’s what we get. From sleeping with the window open to trying natural remedies known to help promote a relaxed state of mind, in many instances, the problem lies far closer in your pillows! Having the wrong type of pillow for your sleeping style can be one of the main reasons you struggle to get to sleep and, with that in mind, I wanted to take a look at choosing the perfect pillows for you and your little ones. Of course, I’m not encouraging you to give your baby a pillow here (which you hopefully wouldn’t anyway), however your toddlers and older need the perfect pillow just as much as you do!
What Kind Of Sleeper Are You (Or They)?
The right choice of pillow depends largely upon how you sleep and whether you sleep on your front, back or side should play a large role in your decision.
Front sleepers should consider a soft pillow such as one filled with down or a low-fill synthetic one.
Back sleepers should use medium thickness pillows such as high-fill down ones, a medium-fill synthetic one or an orthopaedic memory foam one.
Side sleepers should purchase a medium to high thickness pillow such as a high-fill down, memory foam or medium-fill synthetic one.
The same goes for people of all ages so be sure to take a quick peek at your little ones over a few nights to try and get an understanding as to how they sleep once they’ve nodded off.
Do You (Or They) Suffer From Allergies?
If you or your kids suffer from allergies, you’ll want to ensure you go for pillows which are specifically anti-allergy. Despite most high quality natural filled pillows having been treated to prevent them causing allergies, in many cases it’s better to stay on the safe side and go for a synthetic filling which is marketed for those who suffer from allergies.
Do You Have Any Special Requirements?
Whilst more one for the adults in the house, do you have any special requirements which could dictate the type of pillow you’ll need? Perhaps you’ve got a bad back or neck and need a specific orthopaedic pillow or maybe you snore and are looking for an anti-snore pillow? Whatever your requirements, you’ll generally find that there’s a pillow out there to help!
Above else, pillows are a personal preference, however you’ll hopefully have seen above that there’s a number of considerations you should always make. Here at home, myself and the kids recently purchased new pillows having been advised they need replacing every six months (who knew that?!?) and went for ones from the range of Silentnight pillows at SleepyPeople.com. We found the perfect pillow for us all and certainly couldn’t fault the range on offer!
If you’re struggling to get a good night’s sleep, don’t simply presume there’s nothing you can do. Ask yourself how you sleep and whether your pillow is right for you and if it isn’t, do yourself a favour and buy yourself a new one…you won’t regret it!
